The Architectural Crown of Shimla
Also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, the Viceregal Lodge is located on the Observatory Hill. Built in 1888, it served as the summer residence of the British Viceroy of India. The building is a masterpiece of Jacobethan architecture, made of local grey sandstone and light-blue limestone.
Historical Significance
This building has witnessed several historic decisions, including the discussions that led to the Partition of India. Today, it houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS). Visitors can take a guided tour of the teak-paneled interiors and see rare photographs and artifacts from the colonial era.

How to Reach via Taxi
The Viceregal Lodge is about 3-4 km from the Mall Road. While it is walkable, the uphill terrain can be tiring. Most tourists include this in their "Shimla Local Sightseeing" cab package. When booking your cab, ensure it covers the IIAS, State Museum, and Bird Park, as all three are located in the same direction. Hiring a local cab gives you the flexibility to spend as much time as you want exploring the museum and gardens.
